There are some dinners that look like you put in way more effort than you actually did—and a whole chicken in the air fryer is one of them.
This is exactly the kind of recipe I love for House of Frantom: simple ingredients, minimal prep, and something I can turn into more than one meal for our family.
The air fryer gives you beautifully crispy skin while keeping the inside tender and juicy, without having to heat up the entire oven. Serve it for dinner with a couple of easy sides, then save the leftover chicken for lunches, salads, wraps, quesadillas, or another quick dinner later in the week.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
This one checks all the boxes for a busy weeknight or Sunday meal prep. It uses simple ingredients you probably already have, takes only about 10 minutes to prep, and gives you plenty of chicken to use throughout the week.
And that crispy skin? So good.
Air Fryer Whole Chicken
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 50–75 minutes
Rest Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4–6
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken, approximately 3–5 pounds
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ½ teaspoon dried rosemary
Directions
-
Prep the chicken.
Remove the chicken from the packaging and take out anything inside the cavity. Pat the chicken very dry with paper towels. This helps the skin get nice and crispy. -
Season.
Rub the entire chicken with olive oil. Mix the seasonings together and generously season the chicken on all sides. -
Start breast-side down.
Place the chicken breast-side down in your air fryer basket. Make sure there is enough room around the chicken for the hot air to circulate. -
Air fry.
Cook at 360°F for 30 minutes. -
Flip.
Carefully turn the chicken over so the breast is facing up. Continue cooking until the chicken reaches the proper internal temperature.
As a general guide:
3–4 lb chicken: about 50–60 minutes total
4–5 lb chicken: about 60–75 minutes total
Because air fryers and chicken sizes vary, use the temperature rather than the clock to determine when your chicken is finished.
-
Check the temperature.
Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the breast and thigh without touching the bone. The breast should reach at least 165°F. Dark meat is especially tender when the thigh reaches around 175°F. -
Make it extra crispy.
If you'd like crispier skin, increase the air fryer to 400°F for the final 5 minutes, watching closely. -
Rest before carving.
Remove the chicken and let it rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing.
House of Frantom Tip
Cook once, eat twice.
If I'm making a whole chicken, I'm already thinking about what I'm doing with the leftovers. After dinner, pull the remaining meat from the bones and refrigerate it in an airtight container.
Use it the next day for chicken salad, wraps, quesadillas, bowls, soup, or an easy lunch.
It's one of those tiny meal-planning habits that makes the next day feel a whole lot easier.
What to Serve With Air Fryer Whole Chicken
Keep the sides just as simple. We love this with roasted potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrots, a big green salad, green beans, or whatever vegetables need to be used up in the fridge.
For an even easier dinner, prep your vegetables while the chicken cooks and you've got a full meal without spending the entire evening in the kitchen.
A Simple Dinner Worth Keeping on Repeat
Healthy-ish family meals don't have to mean complicated recipes or spending hours in the kitchen.
Sometimes it's a whole chicken, a vegetable, some potatoes, and knowing tomorrow's lunch is already halfway done.
That's the kind of simple I'm always looking for around here.
